Super-England-Trip: Horeion Directa siegt in Lingfield

They went a better pace here and the time was more than two seconds quicker than that recorded by the winner of the fillies' race half an hour earlier. German challenger, HOREION DIRECTA, a strapping individual who was already proven on soft ground, overcame an absence of nearly six months to make the running and rally gamely after favourite Arakan had got upsides and possibly edged narrowly ahead.
Connections reckon this is his trip, and they have a choice now between Group 3 targets at Baden-Baden and Longchamp next month. Arakan had an even longer absence to overcome, having cracked a carpal bone last summer, and while he had run well on easy ground at York last spring his best form had been under quicker conditions. On top of that, he was also unproven at this sort of level over the extended 7f, and a combination of those factors ultimately found him out after he had moved upsides looking the likelier winner. He looks capable of a fair bit better than this.
Millennium Force is probably the best yardstick to the value of the form, as there is no obvious reason why he should not have run somewhere near his form. He had his chance and was beaten fair and square. Mac Love, successful in a below par Group 3 at Goodwood last year, was expected to need this and is better on quicker ground. He was far from disgraced in the circumstances, although Indian Steppes was a bit too close for comfort. Dandoun has lost his form but could pop up one day when his sights are lowered. |
